What is AS/NZS 5377?
The AS/NZS 5377 standard was created by the former Australian Government Department of the Environment (now called the Department of Agriculture, Water, and the Environment) and the New Zealand Ministry for the Environment to provide a consistent approach to evaluating e-waste management systems.
This standard is known in Australia as AS 5377.
Why is AS/NZS 5377 certification important?
- AS 5377 is a legal requirement for many contracts. From 1 July 2016, the Australian Government requires co-regulatory arrangements to only contract with recycling service providers that are certified to AS 5377.
- It establishes a basis for the implementation of an efficient e-waste management system by companies.
- It eliminates the risks related to the management of e-waste and ensures that legislative standards are being met.
- Encourages recommended practice in e-waste management and encourages positive behaviours in e-waste management.
What are the AS/NZS 5377 requirements?
The AS/NZS 5377 standard provides a framework to implement an effective e-waste management system and sets out principles and minimum requirements for the safe and environmentally sound collection, storage, transport and treatment of end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment.
